An activist group would like to have Cudahy City Council meetings translated simultaneously into Spanish.

United4Cudahy has sent an open letter to city officials requesting permission for a Spanish-language interpreter to give a demonstration by translating the Council’s next meeting.

“Access to information concerning governance allows individuals to exercise their political and civil rights in election processes and decision making,” reads the letter. “Translating these meetings in and of itself becomes a transparency tool because it empowers our resident’s with important information that will influence public policies; monitor the quality of public spending; and demands accountability. Thank you in advance for your consideration.”

According to the U.S. Census, half  of Cudahy’s population is immigrant and 90% of residents speak Spanish at home.

United4Cudahy received an interpreting demonstration on Thursday, Nov. 1, from Hilda Estrada, who has been translating the City of Bell’s City Council meetings. According to the letter, Estrada is certified in consecutive and vocational interpretation with more than 10 years of experience, and has been a translator for the courts, the FBI and other organizations.

Present at that Nov. 1 demonstration was Councilman Jack Guerrero, the newest member on the Cudahy City Council and who is pushing for reforms and more accountability in city government. “He was very impressed,” said United4Cudahy spokesperson Cynthia Mosqueda in a phone interview.

Guerrero could not be reached for comment for this article.

If approved, the demonstration for City Council will be free of charge, said Mosqueda.

The City Council meets next on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
